i am new to TCM. I am having a hard time figuring out the functions of blood as seen by TCM. I am also looking for info on Jing and Qi. I don’t think they are really different from each other. Where can i find information on Shen? Anyone help?

Blood in Chinese medicine is very different than that of Western Medicin.
In Geovani’s Foundation book he describes Blood as beeing a form of Qi,
Blood is a dense materialized form of Qi. When comparing blood to yin and yang theory,
bood is yin and Qi is Yang, both inseparable from each other. Blood is material while Qi is immaterial.
I’m not sure if this helps you out at all but TCM theory is difficult at first, it gets easier!

Essence and Qi are different!
Essence is a non-renewable energy source given to us by our parents at conception
Qi is a renewable energy that is replenished on a day to day basis
Essence can only be influenced by our daily lives!
we can use it up quickly by living an unbalanced life (poor diet, not enough sleep, excess emotions, …)
we can conserve our essence by living a balanced life.
Essence is similar in some respects to genetics given to us by our parents.
if we are given poor essence we will have retarded growth, mental disorders, physical abnormalities, …
once our essence is gone, we will no longer be a functioning beeing.

i prefer the book of ted j. kaptchuk, chinese medicine: the web that has no weaver to shed light on the fundamental substances.

I have read the Web that Has No Weaver and found it very enlightening but may not be the best place to first look in this case “someone who is new to Chinese Medicine”
Another good book that I like for quick reference is the “Practical Dictionary of Chinese Medicine” by Nigel Wiseman. He begun the task of creating foundational language for our practice. It would be very nice if most books used the same translations, less confusing !
